4. Guest Speaker - Frances James of the Dallas County Pioneers Society, also known as “the cemetery lady” gave a presentation on work she has been involved with in restoring cemeteries in the Dallas area.  In 1983, Frances was instrumental in helping to save the Bethel Cemetery in Coppell.  This property was in danger of being built over by developers.  Some other projects that Frances worked on were the Ferris Cemetery, the Freedman’s Cemetery and the Long Creek Cemetery.  Frances informed the group that the Texas Historical Commission has changed their policy on historical markers.  There is now a “Historic Texas Cemetery” designation and groups can buy a medallion or plaque.  Frances also discussed the history of some black cemeteries in Dallas County such as the Freedman’s.  In 2005 TXDOT began a survey of Dallas County cemeteries.

5. Cemetery Tour - Several attendees went on a tour of the four historic family cemeteries in Coppell.  At each stop we were given a brief history of the cemetery and the families that were buried there.

6. Our next meeting will be on November 11, 2006.
